E.H. Scott Radio Laboratories, Inc.
4450 Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois
E.H. Scott was a native of New Zealand who emigrated to the United
States at the end of World War I. After an initial interest in
automobiles, he became fascinated with radio, writing many articles on
the best performing radio circuitry of the day. In the second half of
the 1920s, Scott began manufacturing radio transformers and offered a
variety of high performance radio kits. In the 1930s, Scott began custom
manufacturing of expensive, state-of-the-art radios, "The
Stradivarius Of Radio Receivers", typically featuring high tube
counts, chrome plated chassis, and high fidelity audio. His
motto was "The Fine Things Are Always Made By Hand". During
World War II, Scott manufactured many radio receivers for the armed
forces. E.H. Scott sold his interest in his company during the latter
part of World War II and terminated any association with the company in
1945. Scott Radio Laboratories continued in business into the
1950s.
Scott radios are some of the most highly sought collector radios. The
radios were purchased separately from the cabinets, resulting in a wide
variety of possible radio and cabinet combinations. A key value criteria is
the completeness of the radio (i.e. includes all chassis and speaker as
indicated) and the condition of any chrome plated chassis, with
significant rust and/or pitting resulting in a serious reduction in the
listed values.
